Speak Out in Defense of Property Rights Wednesday, November 14, 2012 6:00 p.m. New Britain City Hall 227 West Main Street, New Britain, CT Speak Out in Defense of Property Rights Wednesday, November 14, 2012 6:00 p.m. New Britain City Hall 227 West Main Street, New Britain, CT Dear REALTOR®, As you may know, New Britain is now charging landlords a licensing fee of $150 per unit, per year; the penalty for non-payment of this new tax, is $250 per unit, PER DAY! These numbers add up quickly and will affect not only landlords but many student tenants. New Britain is also levying fines against landlords for tenant caused blight in addition to charging a $500 per call fine on 911 Emergency calls exceeding a limit of just a few calls per year, per property.

The Connecticut Property Owners Alliance, Inc. is filing lawsuits against the city of New Britain in opposition to these two ordinances.

Please join concerned landlords, tenants, property owners and citizens of New Britain at the regularly scheduled Common Council meeting at New Britain City Hall on November 14th and ask the eleven alderman who voted for these ordinances, “Why?”. You can sign up to speak beginning at 6 p.m. or just show up to demonstrate solidarity with other concerned citizens.

Be sure to wear your REALTOR® pin. Become part of history and speak out against these unfair ordinances. CPOA expects to have the largest single turnout of residents in the city’s history show up to try to save New Britain from these bad policies. We are asking you to show up and help in this effort, if we stop this now it may deter other municipalities from establishing similar ordinances. For further information please call the CT Property Owners Alliance at 1–800-369-6153.

Security Deposit Interest Rate for 2012

For calendar year 2012, the interest rate for rental security deposits (and claims for property, funds, or money delivered to the State Treasurer) has been changed downward from 1.5% to 0.16%. This is a change from the past eight years in which landlords were required to pay 1.5% interest on the security deposit money to the tenant at the end of each year's lease and at termination of the tenancy even though they were not earning 1.5% on the security deposit money.
